Saint Mary Major

 

Saint mary Major is one of the four main Churches of Rome and is territory of the Holy See. Built by Pope Sixtus III in the fifth century after the Council of Ephesus has maintained is original structure intact. In the Apse is one of the most important Mosaics of Rome from the thirteen hundred, has two splendid side chapels and a fine wooden ceiling. The ionic columns and the mosaic panels on the side walls are original from the foundation. The floor is made of a geometric mosaic and under the main altar are guarded the Relics of the Holy Manger. The façade in Rococo style, frames the papal lodge wich is decorated by refined Mosaics.
