ROMAN CASTLES

Landscape Lakes Countryside Panoramic Lunch

Lake Nemi - RomeWe’ll leave the city as the Popes did it in the past, driving out along the Appian way direction south-east toward the Roman Hills. It is a volcanic area rich of wine yards, fruit plantations, olive trees and beautiful private residences. From the 15th century wealthy roman families started building their castles (after wards transformed into villas) in this area, creating big allotments that got lost only in modern times. The Pope does still spend part of summertime in Castelgandolfo where we’ll make a short stop to look at the volcanic lake and see the papal palace from the main square. We’ll then enjoy a panoramic drive through the little towns: Albano known for it’s lake, Ariccia for the roasted pork and the bread, Genzano for the festival of flowers, Nemi for the little strawberries and it’s volcanic lake where emperor Nero used to organize special parties on vessels, Rocca di Papa for it’s safe location and then, trough the woods, we will reach Frascati famous for its white wine where we will stop for lunch in a typical winery to enjoy the local food and tastes.
